Boeing Commercial Market Outlook 2022-2041

20 Oct, 2022, No comments

Boeing has issued the latest update to its twenty-year commercial market outlook.

2022 CMO forecast highlights include:

  • Boeing's analysis of market dynamics shows the resilience of the industry with many domestic markets nearly or fully recovered from pandemic impact, while international traffic gains momentum as restrictions ease.

  • The CMO forecasts a market value of $7.2 trillion for new airplane deliveries, with the global fleet increasing by 80% through 2041 compared to 2019 pre-pandemic levels. The commercial services market to meet this demand is valued at $3.6 trillion.

  • Approximately half of passenger jet deliveries will replace today’s models, improving the global fleet’s fuel efficiency and sustainability.

  • Continuing their strong growth story, Asian markets account for roughly 40% of long-term global demand for new airplanes. Europe and North America each account for just over 20% of demand, with 15% of deliveries going to other regions.

  • The CMO also predicts continued robust demand for dedicated freighters to support global supply chains and growing express networks. Carriers will need 2,800 additional freighters overall, including 940 new widebody models in addition to converted narrow-body and widebody freighters over the forecast period

EUROCONTROL Issues New 7-Year Traffic Forecast

18 Oct, 2022, No comments

Air traffic in Europe is not expected to recover to 2019 levels until after 2024, according to a new 7-year forecast of air traffic issued by EUROCONTROL.

The forecast, which updates and extends the forecast made in June 2022 before the summer season, sets out three scenarios with the most optimistic showing recovery to 2019 levels during 2023 and the most pessimistic with recovery after 2028. The most likely ‘baseline’ scenario foresees the recovery in 2025

airBaltic will Operate SWISS Flights This Winter

22 Aug, 2022, No comments

SWISS has agreed a collaboration with Air Baltic for the coming winter timetable period. The partnership is intended to further stabilize SWISS’s flight schedules and provide even more reliability for its customers’ travel plans. It should also further ease the present pressures on the company’s cabin personnel. The collaboration envisages Air Baltic operating up to six Airbus A220-300 aircraft on SWISS’s behalf under a wet-lease agreement.

The collaboration will take the form of a wet-lease agreement (i.e. the lease-in of both aircraft and crew) under which Air Baltic will perform SWISS flights on SWISS’s behalf. The services concerned will be operated by up to six of Air Baltic’s Airbus A220-300 aircraft, which seat up to 145 passengers. SWISS itself operates 21 such twinjets. The Air Baltic aircraft will perform flights throughout the SWISS European route network which had previously been planned for SWISS’s own operation.

“This collaboration with Air Baltic will enable us to further stabilize our own flight schedules and give our customers even greater reliability for making their travel plans,” explains SWISS Chief Commercial Officer Tamur Goudarzi Pour. “On top of this, it should also help further relieve the present pressures on our cabin crew corps.”

Irrespective of this development, SWISS will continue to steadily recruit and train more of its own cabin personnel. The new collaboration with Air Baltic is also viewed as a complement to SWISS’s existing partnership with Helvetic Airways. On the latter front, in addition to the six Helvetic aircraft already operated all year round on SWISS’s behalf, further Helvetic Airways equipment may also be flexibly deployed on SWISS routes in future to cover peaks in demand.

The pandemic has affected us all. For us cabin crew, we have continued working while also facing uncertainty about our careers, endured long periods of isolation and extended exposure to the virus, and faced big increases in angry passengers.

Yes to Safety: a safe environment for cabin crew and passengers

Yes to Decent Jobs: Cabin Crew deserve fair pay and fair conditions

Yes to a Healthy Recovery: post-Covid plans should put workers’ health first

As aviation returns, and you start travelling again - on holiday, for work or to see your loved ones - we are asking you to support us as we demand safety and respect.

airBaltic has announced that starting June 1, 2022, it plans to launch new scheduled flights between Tampere, Finland, and Amsterdam. airBaltic has scheduled to connect both cities with two weekly flights. airBaltic Issues 2021 Annual Report

20 Apr, 2022, No comments
The company ended 2021 with a loss of €135.7 million, nearly half of 2020's number.

The airline transported 1.63 million passengers to and from the Baltic States last year, 21% more than a year ago, said Martins Gauss, executive director of airBaltic. He attributed the increase in passenger numbers to the increase in the number of flights on major business routes.

airBaltic provided a total of 94 routes from Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius last year, an increase of 24% compared to 2020. A total of 23,400 flights were carried out last year, which is 5% more than in 2020. The company employed 1600 people last year, up 30% over a year earlier.

The airline continued to expand its fleet last year, receiving seven new Airbus A220-300 planes. By increasing the size of its fleet, the company plans to reach a profit by 2024. It is also planned to launch the listing of airBaltic shares on the stock exchange (IPO) at the end of 2023 or early 2024.

airBaltic To Open a New European Base

9 Dec, 2021, No comments

As its name suggests, Latvian flag carrier airBaltic has a significant presence in the Baltic region. In addition to its hub in Riga, it also has bases in neighboring Estonia (Tallinn) and Lithuania (Vilnius). Next year, the airline is eyeing further growth in the form of a new European base. However, in a break from tradition, this one will not be located in the Baltics.

airBaltic’s dynamic network approach

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, airBaltic has shown a dynamic approach to its network. The result of this has been that, as Simple Flying reported in September, the airline’s route portfolio has now surpassed the network it operated before the health crisis.

Earlier today, Simple Flying had the chance to sit down with airBaltic CEO Martin Gauss at the World Aviation Festival in London. The Latvian flag carrier’s dynamic network was one of several topics covered in what proved a fascinating insight into the airline’s pandemic-era operations. Regarding the shifts that airBaltic made to its routes, Gauss explained that:

“We had to reduce frequencies on the classical business shuttle routes, like Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Frankfurt, for the benefit of new destinations, where there is demand because of leisure traffic. And that led to a higher amount of routes served by us today, [although] we have less block hours, or less flights, overall.”

A new European base for 2022

With frequencies set to increase as the world of European aviation hopefully begins to open up, Gauss confirmed that airBaltic would receive eight more Airbus A220-300s next year. These deliveries will begin in the Spring. However, it isn’t just the fleet that will expand.

Indeed, airBaltic is also hoping to establish a greater European footprint in terms of bases. It plans to do so by opening a fourth base, to complement its existing bases in Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius. The location for this remains under wraps, with Gauss explaining:

“We will open a base in Europe. It’s too early to say where. (…) We [have been] successful with the Tallinn operation in the last two years, becoming a leader in the Estonian market. (…) And that led us to say okay, we’ll take the next one and put aircraft somewhere else, which we will announce soon. It’s a historic announcement because it will be the first outside the Baltics.”

Africa isn’t on the cards yet

Gauss also explained to Simple Flying that he is often questioned about the prospects of establishing the airline in Africa. After all, its Airbus A220s have the range to serve the north of the continent, and already operate lengthy flights to the likes of Dubai and Tenerife, which last nearly seven hours. However, this isn’t on the cards for the time being. Gauss states:

“We have no problem with the range of the aircraft reaching Addis Ababa, so people could say Northern Africa [as a potential location]. But I was asked that, and it’s not the first place where airBaltic would put an aircraft.”

airBaltic Takes Delivery of Its 32nd Airbus A220-300

5 Oct, 2021

On October 2, 2021, airBaltic took delivery of its 32nd Airbus A220-300, registered as YL-ABF, in Riga. This is the seventh and final Airbus A220-300 aircraft delivery for airBaltic in 2021. This aircraft is a part of the 50 Airbus A220-300 which airBaltic has ordered. airBaltic holds 30 options and purchase rights for the same aircraft type.

Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic: “We are delighted that a total of seven Airbus A220-300 have joined our sustainable fleet this year. We are now the largest Airbus A220-300 operator in the world and the largest Airbus A220 operator in Europe. With a growing number of new aircraft, we will be able to provide better connectivity, as well as give our passengers the opportunity to visit their favourite leisure destinations during the winter season.”

Since May 2020, airBaltic operates all its flights with a single aircraft type – Airbus A220-300, thus minimizing the complexity and benefiting from the additional efficiency provided by the aircraft.
